I’ve jumped back on the Home Assistant train recently, and having just had some AC installed, this seemed like the perfect time to boost the system’s SO approval factor1.

I have a Bosch Climate 3200i split air con in the living room, and a cheap Zigbee IR blaster pointed at it. All I wanted was to control it from Home Assistant like any other thermostat. How hard could that be? It turned out to need a custom ZHA quirk, a workaround for a firmware bug, decoding the remote’s IR protocol from nine button presses, and a small custom integration.
