Macro
Back in the summer of 2021 I went through a macro phase. I started out playing with my Sony E 70-350mm G OSS, then picked up a cheap set of macro extension rings and switched to the 18-135mm kit lens, which is what every photo here from 2021 was taken on (I’d half thought it was my Sigma, but the EXIF says otherwise, I switched to that later).
They’re all from June and July 2021, at home and around Ashford, apart from the spring buds at the end, which I took on the Sigma 18-50mm in March 2022. It turns out the garden is mostly flies once you get close enough.
My insect identification is enthusiastic rather than expert, so if you can name any of the flies I’ve left unnamed, or spot one I’ve got wrong, please let me know.

Lone Ant
- Sat 26 Jun 2021, 13:01

Most likely a black garden ant (Lasius niger), the same kind as in Aphid Farm (Wikipedia). I took it between the two honeybee photos, so I think this is the same hebe.1
-
Shiny black, with brownish legs, in a garden: the black garden ant is by far the likeliest, but I haven’t checked it properly. ↩︎

Pond Skater
- Sat 26 Jun 2021, 13:13
- At home and around Ashford
Most likely a common pond skater (Gerris lacustris). Water-repellent hairs on its feet let it stand on the surface film, and it hunts by feeling for the vibrations of insects that fall in (Kent Wildlife Trust).1
-
There are several similar pond skaters in the UK, and I can’t tell them apart from one photo, but this is the common one. ↩︎

Possibly a tachinid fly. Tachinids lay their eggs on or in other insects, usually caterpillars, and their grubs eat the host from the inside (Wikipedia).1
-
The long, stiff bristles on the end of its abdomen are typical of tachinids, which tend to be bristlier and stockier than other flies, but plenty of other grey flies look much like this, and naming one usually means keying it out under a microscope. ↩︎

Spotted Hoverfly

Probably a Eupeodes hoverfly, on a sweet william.1
-
The pale comma-shaped spots on a black abdomen fit Eupeodes, but several species look alike and I can’t see enough to say which. ↩︎

Aphid Farm
- Tue 13 Jul 2021, 14:02
- At home and around Ashford
Black aphids being tended by ants. The ants “farm” aphids for the sugary honeydew they produce, and protect them in return.1
-
Most likely black bean aphids (Aphis fabae) and black garden ants (Lasius niger), the usual pairing in British gardens, but I haven’t checked them properly. ↩︎

It’s the commonest of several very similar Lucilia species, which can only be told apart under a microscope (NatureSpot). ↩︎

Most likely a garden spider (Araneus diadematus), the UK’s most common orb web spider, sitting in the middle of its web waiting to feel a struggling insect (Kent Wildlife Trust).1
-
The giveaway is the white cross on its back, which I can’t see because I photographed it from underneath, but the size, colour and banded legs all fit. ↩︎
